The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Greg James has increased listeners by more than 300,000 in his first full quarter.
Latest Rajar data shows since Greg James started on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show, there has been an increase of listeners aged 10+ to 5.59m (Monday-Thursday), from 5.28m last quarter.
The same period (17 September-16 December 2018) has also seen a record for digital listening, with the proportion of digital listening now at 52.6%, and podcast listening also reaching a record high with 6.2 million listening to at least one podcast each week and 3 million 15-34 year olds.
Bob Shennan, Director of BBC Radio and Music, says: “It’s brilliant that our new and fresh Radio 1 Breakfast Show is doing so well, on air as well as digitally on BBC Sounds, social media and YouTube. Greg James is a superb DJ and we know his listeners love the show. We can see that a busy few months for listeners in the run up to Christmas has impacted on all radio listening in the UK, but despite that our radio breakfast shows demonstrate what an important role live radio still plays in people’s daily lives with millions waking up to BBC radio, whether it’s for brilliant music, great guests or comprehensive news coverage.
“Nearly 9 in 10 people continue to listen to radio in the UK but as we know listening habits are changing. We’ve made great strides in reinventing our overall audio offer so that audiences now and in the future can discover the very best of the BBC, whenever they want to. This is paying off and increasing numbers of people are listening to music, radio and podcasts on BBC Sounds with recent record figures.” All BBC radio’s weekly reach over the period (Q4, 17 September-16 December 2018) was 33.9 million (34.3m last quarter and 35.01m last year) and a share of 50.9% (51.7% last quarter and 52.8% last year).
BBC Radio 1 posted a reach of 10.19 million listeners aged 10+ (from 10.56m last quarter and 10.72m last year). There were 9.37 million 15+ listeners (from 9.6m last quarter and 9.8m last year) while the network’s share of listening was 5.7% (from 6% last quarter and 5.9% last year). The Radio 1 Breakfast Show now attracts 5.59m listeners 10+ (Monday-Thursday), up from 5.28m last quarter. This quarter saw 5.11million 15+ listeners (Monday-Thursday), compared to 4.88m last quarter and 5.32m last year.
